In 2023, natural cataclysms caused nearly 230 billion euros of losses worldwide, the German Munich RE insurance company said.
Munich Re, considered the largest reinsurance company in the world, has published an annual report on global losses from natural disasters. According to the latest data, published on Tuesday, natural catastrophes only last year led to total losses worth $ 250 billion (about 228 billion euros).
Among the largest and most tragic natural catastrophes was an earthquake, which occurred on February 6 in the border region between Syria and Turkey. This tragedy has led to a loss of about 58,000 lives and caused losses worth about $ 50 billion, but only some of these losses were insured. It is noted that this epicenter is about a tenth of all these losses.
In general, during 2023, natural disasters led to death about 74,000 people, which is a record after an earthquake on Haiti in 2010. According to Munich Re, only "ordinary" storms last year caused losses worth $ 76 billion, with 58 billion insurance protection.
