The Budget Committee of the German Parliament has supported a request for additional military assistance to Ukraine of 3 billion euros. This proposal was approved by the voices of opposition parties-the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and free Democrats (VDP). At the same time, representatives of the ruling coalition, including the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Greens, abstained from voting.
Despite the support of the Committee, the final decision to provide additional assistance to Ukraine should be approved by Finance Minister Jorg Kukis. Although the Budget Committee cannot approve funding on its own, the Ministry of Finance usually satisfies the requests approved by the Committee.
The members of the Committee from the CDU and the SDPN believe that the budget has enough money for this request. Chancellor Olaf Scholz also supports additional assistance, but insists that in order to finance this step, it is necessary to temporarily refuse state debt restrictions, which will allow the country to make additional borrowing.
This step is an important signal of Ukraine's support from Germany in the face of continuation of the conflict in eastern Europe.
