The German government plans to significantly limit public information on weapons to Ukraine. About it reports the German edition of Spiegel , referring to sources in the government.
After three years of relative openness to military assistance, the new government team has decided to change the approach - the volume of reports on the supply of weapons will be reduced. This means that most of the data that was previously public will no longer be open.
In June 2022, under pressure from the public, the German government began to regularly publish full military assistance lists on the Bundeswehr website. All positions were stated there - in particular, 25 self -propelled howitzers, 121 LEOPARD tanks, more than 1000 shock drones and almost half a million artillery ammunition. The last data was updated on May 6 - on the day when the new Federal Government rested for office.
As Parliament will be informed in the future, it is unclear. Unlike participation in military operations, weapons supply does not require the approval of the Bundestag. Deputies are expected to receive information at the Closed Defense Committee meetings.
Spiegel journalists also point out that a change in the government's course can influence the decision to supply Ukraine's winged Taurus missiles - one of the most pressing issues in the foreign policy of the new Chancellor Friedrich Merz. During the election campaign, he repeatedly stated that he supports the transfer of weapons only in coordination with allies, including France and the United Kingdom, which already have a similar weapon.
