The UN reported a sharp increase in victims among civilians in Ukraine

In May 2025, at least 183 civilians were killed as a result of Russian attacks throughout Ukraine. At least 836 people were injured. Such data were published by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (MMPLU), the Mission press service reports.

According to the mission, the vast majority of victims - 97% - recorded in the territory controlled by Ukraine. Compared to the previous months of 2025, May became one of the most bloody to civilians. At the same time, the level of mortality and injury among civilians in May became a continuation of the rapid increase in losses, which began in April.

"This year is terrible for civilian population throughout Ukraine: the number of dead and wounded is much greater than in the same period of 2024," - said MMPL Chairman Daniel Belle.

In total, in the first five months of 2025, the number of killed and injured among civilians exceeded similar indicators by almost 50% over the same period last year.

“Multiple night shelling with the use of hundreds of weapons sow fear among families who spend nights in bomb shelters, listening to the sounds of drones that fly over their heads. At such a rate and scale, the further death of civilians is not only possible - it is inevitable, ”Belle emphasized.
