The UN opened a case against the Venezuelan government for electoral fraud

The UN Human Rights Committee has launched an investigation against the Venezuelan government over alleged massive fraud in the July 2024 presidential election. This investigation could become historic and lead to President Nicolás Maduro being declared illegitimate.

The committee appealed to the Venezuelan authorities with a demand to preserve all election materials, in particular, vote counting protocols. The statement emphasized that the state should refrain from destroying any documents necessary to determine the election results.

The opening of the case was announced by Paulo Abrau, former executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. He noted that the investigation began after a complaint filed by lawyers IHR . The complaint accuses the Venezuelan government of widespread fraud, restrictions on the ability of Venezuelans abroad to vote and a lack of transparency during the electoral process.

"Millions of Venezuelans abroad who have the right to vote were deprived of the opportunity to participate in the elections," the Committee said in a statement.

The lawyers who filed the complaint called the opening of the case "an important step in the fight for democracy in Venezuela." This investigation could have significant consequences for the international recognition of the election results and the position of the Maduro regime on the world stage.
