In the event of a victory in the US presidential election in November 2024, Donald Trump immediately initiates peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. This was stated by Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban after private conversations with a candidate from Republicans. Orban claims that Trump already has a detailed plan for this.
Trump's strategy on peace talks
According to Orban, Trump plans to start negotiations for peaceful conflict settlement immediately after the election. This can significantly change the geopolitical situation in Europe. In this regard, Orban urges the European Union to restore direct diplomatic contacts with Russia and start negotiations with China to find ways to settle the war in Ukraine.
In a private letter to the EU leaders, Orban expressed concern for potential changes in the financial support of Ukraine by the US and the EU in the event of Trump's victory. "I am more than convinced that in the event of President Trump's victory, the proportion of a financial burden between the US and the EU will change significantly to the EU's disadvantageous side when it comes to Ukraine's financial support," The Financial Times quoted.
Orban criticizes the current EU strategy, which, he said, copies the US policy on war and calls for the development of an independent European strategy. "Our European strategy in the name of the transatlantic unity copies the US leading policy," Orban said. "Until now, we have not had a sovereign and independent European strategy or a plan of political action. I propose to discuss whether it is appropriate to continue this policy in the future."
Orban believes that the EU has a chance to reduce tensions and initiate peace talks. "We can find a window of opportunity with a strong moral and rational basis to start a new stage in our policy ... to make efforts to reduce tensions and/or to create conditions for temporary ceasefire and/or the beginning of peace talks," the Hungarian Prime Minister suggested to EU leaders.
