In Poland, the construction of defensive fortifications under the name "Eastern Shield" has begun, which aims to create a military infrastructure on the border with Belarus and Russia. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, noting that the first works have already started.
The "Eastern Shield" project was presented in May of this year. It provides for the construction of various types of fortifications, fortifications and natural obstacles that will strengthen the Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Russian borders. As part of the implementation of the project, it is also planned to build reconnaissance and threat detection systems, advanced bases, logistics hubs and warehouses, as well as the implementation of drone countermeasures systems.
The total cost of the project is 10 billion zlotys (approximately 2.55 billion US dollars) and it will be partially financed from the funds of the European Union. Completion of construction is planned for 2028, and the main goal is to counter possible threats from neighbors, in particular Belarus and Russia.
