In the context of exacerbation of tensions in Europe due to Russia's aggression, Poland has expressed a decisive proposal for the deployment of US nuclear weapons in its territory. This initiative was announced by the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, who stressed that the placement of American nuclear warheads in Poland would be an important step in strengthening the security of not only Poland, but of all Eastern Europe in the current geopolitical situation.
Duda drew attention to the fact that from the moment of NATO expansion to the east in 1999, when new countries of Eastern Europe joined the Alliance, the security of the region has undergone significant changes. According to him, NATO infrastructure should follow the movement of the Alliance and adapt to new realities. "It is obvious to me: if we have shifted the borders of NATO to the East, then the infrastructure of the Alliance should move here to the eastern part of Europe, namely to Poland," the Polish President said.
Duda added that the placement of US nuclear weapons in Poland will not only promote Poland's security, but also increase the level of restraint of aggression by Russia. He stressed that such a weapon can be an effective means of enhancing NATO defense potential, because if necessary, it will respond promptly to any attempts to destabilize the situation in Europe.
The President of Poland also expressed his hope for the revival of the Nuclear Weapons Project, which was discussed in the administration of former US President Joe Biden in 2022. This project envisaged the creation of mechanisms for joint management of nuclear warheads between the United States and NATO allies, in particular in Eastern Europe.
In the event of this plan, Poland could become an important element of this strategy, which would significantly increase the security of the region and strengthen NATO's position in East of Europe. Considering Russia's aggressive statements and its plans to move nuclear weapons to Belarus, this initiative is of particular relevance.
Poland also stressed that Russia did not hesitate to move nuclear weapons to satellite country, such as Belarus, without asking permission from the international community. In 2023, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would move its tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, which caused anxiety among Western allies.
"Russia did not even hesitate when moving its nuclear weapons to Belarus. They did not ask anyone," Duda emphasized, noting that the West could not leave this step of the Kremlin, which significantly changes the strategic situation in Europe.
According to the Polish President, the US and NATO should respond to these actions by moving their nuclear weapons to Poland to ensure the proper level of restraint for Russia and strengthen security in East of Europe.
Duda also noted that the issue of nuclear weapons is being considered in the US administration, and it is the US President, whether Donald Trump or his successor, should decide where to place the US nuclear warheads. He stressed that Trump is entitled to his own vision of this issue, but the recent situation with Russia shows how important it is to continue to strengthen its defense on the eastern borders of the Alliance.
