ISIS-linked rebels have killed more than 40 people in eastern Congo

At least 42 people have been killed in the Beni region of eastern Congo in an attack blamed on rebels linked to Islamic State.

The attack was probably carried out by members of the ADF, an active group operating in eastern Congo that has pledged allegiance to ISIS. According to reports, the attackers invited residents to gather in the market for a meeting, and then opened fire on the crowd with firearms and used machetes.

Islamists have already carried out a similar attack in the same region this week, killing at least 41 people.

The ADF group originated in Uganda and has been active in the jungles of eastern Congo for several decades.
