A second round of voting may be required to determine the winner in the Lithuanian presidential election. According to the preliminary results of the first round, reported by the Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT on Monday, May 13, the current President of Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Igrid Shimonite will probably meet in the second round in two weeks. Currently, after counting 69%of the vote, Nauseda gained 46%, Shimonite - 16%. To win the first round, the candidate must gain more than 50% of the vote. Both candidates expressed confidence in their chances in the place in the second round of voting on May 26. Nauseda stated: "I am ready to fight persistently for winning in the second round, and I think I will be able to do it. I think that all the trends show that my rival will be Ingrida Shimonite." Shimonite, in turn, noted that reaching the second round was its main purpose, and she believes that this goal was achieved.
During the first round of the presidential election, a referendum on multiple citizenship is also held.
Earlier, Lithuanian special services warned that Russia and China were preparing to influence the result of the Lithuanian elections. The Director of the State Security Department Darus Yunishkis said that not only information campaigns or cyberattacks, but also, in particular, false warnings about mine polling stations, could be used to disrupt the election process or influence the election results.
