President Panama rejected the negotiations on the Panama Canal from the United States

On January 30, 2025, President Panama Jose Raul Mulino clearly stated that the country did not lead or plan to negotiate with the United States to transfer control over the Panama Canal. It happened during his press conference, at which he emphasized the constant status of the channel as a Panama national heritage.

Mulino categorically rejected the idea of negotiations, emphasizing that the issue of the Panama Canal is not discussed. “It's impossible. I cannot negotiate, and even more so start the process of negotiations on the channel. This is what is not subject to view. The channel belongs to Panama, ”he said.

At the same time, he stressed that Panama plays a key role in solving issues important to the United States, in particular in the field of immigration, drug fighting and organized crime. Panama is known to be a key transit country for Venezuelan and Colombian immigrants who are trying to reach the United States through a dangerous Daryne corridor. Mulino also noted that last year an agreement was signed with the United States to close this corridor, which included the installation of barbed wire on the border and patrolling the Panama Fleet.

However, President Panama is convinced that US President Donald Trump's initiatives on control of the channel are doomed to failure. He stressed that Panama has been fighting for her right to control this strategic territory, which would remain neutral, despite political changes.

"The only thing I wish is to sit at the table for negotiations and frankly, without unnecessary witnesses, to talk to the United States," Mulino added, emphasizing that he does not seek anything more than open and constructive dialogue.
