Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to maintain diplomatic ties with the United States, but his recent visit to a weapons manufacturing plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania, raised concerns among Republicans. Some of them believe that the Ukrainian leader made a strategic mistake, because he may have interfered in American politics by criticizing the potential US vice president from the Republicans, JD Vance, whom he called "too radical."
According to a Politico report, Republicans are a key electorate for Zelensky, as the escalation of the conflict with Russia continues for the second year, and in the current situation, it is important to maintain relations with all political forces. However, Vance's provocation and visit to Pennsylvania could become a source of trouble for the Ukrainian president, especially given former President Donald Trump's critical attitude to his policies.
Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, said that the interference of foreign leaders in the domestic politics of the United States is a mistake. He emphasized that Ukraine needs all possible friends, and believes that Zelensky should avoid such incidents in the future.
Tom Cole, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, also weighed in on Zelensky's visit, saying it was "not helpful." However, according to him, this issue did not become the subject of active discussions during the meeting of legislators.
Cole warned that meddling in US domestic politics could be ill-advised, especially in the run-up to an election. He advises foreign leaders to stay out of American politics because any action can be viewed ambiguously.
With the election less than two months away, Republicans are becoming particularly sensitive to comments about their candidates. Given this situation, the future of cooperation between Ukraine and the USA may depend on how both sides manage their relations in terms of domestic politics.
