Today, June 18, the capital of North Korea, Pyongyan, meets Vladimir Putin, who arrived on a friendly state visit. The city is dressed in the flags of the Russian Federation, portraits of the Kremlin leader and inscriptions in Russian. This is the first such event in the last 24 years when Putin has visited the DPRK. The last time happened in 2000, when Kim Jong Ir, the country of the present leader Kim Jong -in, was governed by the country.
This visit aims to discuss the possible withdrawal of UN sanctions on North Korea and military cooperation between countries. The meeting will last from June 18 to June 19, and according to Putin's administration, it takes place at the invitation of the DPRK Chairman Kim Jong -in.
Experts note that improving relations between Russia and North Korea is caused by situational circumstances. Russia is interested in labor and weapons, while Pyongyang seeks to strengthen the economy and food safety after the pandemic and years of sanctions, as well as access to Moscow's technologies for its satellite and nuclear industries.
This visit is also a response to Kim Jong -in's last visit to Russia in September 2023.
