The Panama Channel administration plans to expand the navigable path to reduce the impact of future droughts. The Board of Directors of the channel has submitted a proposal to the government of Panama aimed at finding decisions to overcome the consequences of record drought.
The proposal considers the determination of the duct of the channel and possible changes or expansion of the boundaries of the marine artery. It is also planned to remove restrictions on the construction of new reservoirs on the channel.
The key aspect of the potential project is the construction of a multi -purpose reservoir on the Indio River outside the channel watershed, which will require government permission. It is noted that the study was carried out before the construction of a possible tank.
It is expected that the project will take a long time as it envisages the approval of several government agencies. Channel Minister of Channel Panama Arisisides Royo stated that the project would need careful consideration.
Meanwhile, the channel administration is considering short -term solutions to improve fresh water supply to duct gateways. One of the ideas is the construction of a new water intake of raw water in Gamboa and the connection of the Gamboa and Paraiso rivers. This project is already at the tender stage, with the deadline for submission of proposals in January 2024, and is aimed at efficient use of water from Lake Gatun to power the Panama Canal.
