US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied information about possible negotiations on Canada's accession to the United States as the 51st state. He stated this during an interview with Fox News.
Answering questions about the seriousness of President Donald Trump's statements that Canada "should become a 51st state", Rubio assured that no negotiations were being conducted. Instead, the United States is currently focusing on the introduction of new trading tariffs as Trump believes that the terms of trade with Canada are unfair.
"Well, we do not participate in the negotiations to make them a staff," the Secretary of State said.
Rubio also noted that tariffs could affect bilateral relations between countries, but stressed that the US and Canada would remain neighbors.
Earlier it was reported that the US will temporarily suspend the introduction of import duties for Canada, which may be related to economic negotiations between countries.
