The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported that during 2023 94 media journalists and media journalists were killed, including 9 women, and a particularly high rate of death was recorded in the Gaza Sector. The President of the Federation Dominic Pradali called for immediate global measures to stop this tragedy.
It is important to note that the war between Israel and the Hamas group, started on October 7, became the most deadly for journalists for the history of statistics with the death of media representatives. During this period, at least one journalist was killed daily in the Gaza sector.
This year, 72% of journalists killed around the world lost their lives during a gas conflict. In addition, other media workers have lost their lives in different countries, such as Afghanistan, Philippines, India, China and Bangladesh.
393 media journalists and media workers remain prisoners in different countries, including China, Belarus, Egypt, Iran, Myanom, Turkey and Russia. For the last three years, they have been marked by a significant increase in the number of prisoners of journalists. For example, in Russia and occupied Crimea, 40 journalists are in custody and 35 in Belarus.
In the context of a full -scale invasion of Ukraine, 63 journalists were killed during hostilities or as a result of Russian shelling and torture, as evidenced by the data of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
