The recent statement of German Chancellor, Olaf Scholtz, during the debate in the Bundestag, shed light on his policy on Ukraine and efforts to avoid escalation of war. The Chancellor emphasized the importance of Ukraine's support, but with the condition of avoiding direct conflict actions by Germany. He promised this issue to raise the government in December during the discussion, which could lead to early elections in February.
During a speech at the Bundestag, Scholtz assured that Germany would continue to support Ukraine on the way to a democratic, sovereign state. "We must ensure that Ukraine has prospects as a democratic, sovereign nation. It should not remain lonely, and this issue should be discussed," the Chancellor said, confirming his country's solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
However, it is important for Scholz to maintain a balance between supporting support and escalation of conflict, which can draw Germany into the war. The chancellor stressed that Germany has already made the largest contribution in Europe to support Ukraine, but should prevent the situation from aggravating. He explained his own contribution to the "absence of escalation" in particular by the fact that Germany does not plan to provide Ukraine with long -range missiles that can reach Russia.
Responding to criticism, Scholz clearly stated: "I am against the weapons we have fired at the depths of Russia. He stressed that these issues will be discussed during future debates and possibly before the new elections.
In addition, Scholz again voiced his position on Ukraine's membership in NATO. He recalled that a belligerent country could not become part of the Alliance, so Ukraine's invitation to NATO is not on the agenda. At the same time, he categorically rejected the possibility of negotiations on war in Ukraine without the participation of Ukraine itself, which reflects his desire to provide Kyiv's political autonomy in resolving the conflict.
