Xi Jinping asks Biden to change the US position on Taiwan

Last year, President Xi Jinping appealed to US President Joe Biden to change the wording that the United States use when discussing his position on Taiwan's independence. About it reports Reuters, referring to two American officials, acquaintances with a private conversation of leaders.

During the meeting of Biden and SI in November last year near San Francisco, the Chinese side asked the US team to say that the United States was opposed to Taiwan's independence, instead of formulating it as "do not support" the island's independence.

Sources indicate that SI assistants have repeatedly addressed these requests for several months, but the United States refused to make changes. This is part of prolonged diplomatic tension, because Taiwan's status remains the most sensitive theme in American-Chinese relations.

The United States terminated official relations with the Taiwan government in 1979, but under US law, they are obliged to provide democratic Taiwan, self -defense. China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has never refused to use force to control it.

One source stressed that Taiwan was informed of recent proposals from Washington. "Beijing leaders would be glad if Joe Biden was talking about Taiwan completely different things than he says, no doubt," said one of Biden's high -ranking officials. However, Biden is expected to follow the traditional American position on Taiwan's independence.
