In the first half of 2025, 249 thousand deaths were recorded in Ukraine, which is almost three times higher than the number of births, which amounted to 86.8 thousand. Such data were published by the Ministry of Justice in its report on state registration of civil status acts.
Compared to the corresponding period of 2024, the number of births decreased by 0.86 thousand (1%), and the number of dead - by 1.97 thousand (0.8%). Compared to the second half of the year last year, the situation worsened: the birth rate decreased by 2.5%, and mortality increased by 2%.
The worst rates were recorded in the Kherson and Donetsk regions, where the ratio of the number of dead to born is 12.2 and 10.3, respectively. This significantly exceeds last year's indicators, which were 11 and 8.5, respectively.
Significantly higher than the average is registered in Zaporizhzhya and Kharkiv regions (5), Sumy (4.9), Chernihiv (4,8), Dnipropetrovsk (4,1), Cherkasy and Poltava (4), Mykolaiv (3,7) and Kirovograd (3,6).
The least excess of birth rate is in the western regions. In the Rivne region, the figure is 1.6, in Volyn-1.7, in the Transcarpathian and the capital-1.8, in Lviv-1.9, Chernivtsi-2,1, Ivano-Frankivsk-2.2.
In addition, the number of marriages decreased in the first half of the year - up to 72.77 thousand, which is 5.7% less than last year. At the same time, the number of divorces decreased by 18.5% to 12.69 thousand. The divorce by court decision also became less than 13.7% - up to 0.5 thousand.
