German Chancellor Olaf Soltz has called for an increase in the presence of NATO in Greenland, citing growing security challenges in the Arctic region. In an interview for RND, he stressed that the principle of integrity of borders, which is defended in the context of war in Ukraine, should be applied to all countries.
“We support Ukraine because the aggressive war of the Russian President violates the important principle of European peaceful order: borders should not be transmitted by force. This principle should be applied to everyone, ”Solt stressed.
He noted that through climate changes in the Arctic, new navigable routes are opened, which are of considerable interest in Russia and China. This, he said, creates new safety challenges that need attention from the North Atlantic Alliance.
“This is why there are legal security issues that we need to discuss with each other in NATO. In my opinion, we should increase the presence of NATO in Greenland, ”the German Chancellor added.
Scholz's proposal can be one of the key issues for discussion within the Alliance's strategic planning, especially against the background of exacerbation of international relations and increased Russia's military activity in the Northern Hemisphere.
