The European Union agreed to allocate five billion euros for military support to Ukraine

The move is seen as an important boost for Kyiv as US support falters and its armed forces struggle to contain Russia.

European Union countries have agreed to provide five billion euros ($5.48 billion) in military aid to Ukraine as part of a renewal of an EU-run aid fund, giving Kyiv timely support as it fights a Russian invasion.

Representatives of the 27 EU member states agreed to review the European Peace Fund (EPF) at a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday after months of wrangling, with EU leaders France and Germany at the center of much of the debate.

"The message is clear: we will support Ukraine with everything necessary for victory," said the EU's chief representative for foreign policy, Josep Borrell, after the decision was made.

The fund operates as a large cash-back scheme, compensating EU members for sending ammunition to other countries.

France, an active supporter of the European defense industry, has insisted on a firm "buy European" policy on weapons eligible for compensation.
