The US should shift the burden of protecting Europe to the Europeans themselves - Foreign Affairs

For decades, the United States has been a major guarantor of Europe's security, tying the continent to itself through NATO and acting as the main security supplier in the region. However, now, against the background of internal challenges and changes in global policy, it is time to change the role of the United States in the international arena. This is stated in the article Foreign Affairs .

To begin with, the states must start withdrawing some of their troops from Europe, translating responsibility for providing ordinary armed forces back to the shoulders of Europeans. Today, about 100,000 US servicemen are stationed here, most of all in Germany.

According to the publication, the process could be launched with the withdrawal of 20,000 servicemen transferred here after the Biden administration after the start of Russia's war in Ukraine. You can then announce the withdrawal of an additional 12,000 servicemen from Germany - this plan was already approved by Trump, but Biden slowed it.

Two of these steps will help send a clear signal: the strongest European states are time to activate their own efforts.

While politicians in Europe have been thinking about ambitious and expensive steps, such as Ukraine's accession to NATO and perhaps entering the war in Ukraine, the transfer of responsibility for Europe's security for Europeans themselves would have cooled their desire to pursue a reckless policy. Today, the US debt is $ 35 trillion, the annual budget deficit is $ 1.5 trillion. Add political differences within the country. Given that there are no signs of improving the financial situation or weakening of internal pressure, the authorities need to review the external obligations of the United States.
