On May 1, US State Department spokeswoman Temmy Bruce stated that the United States would no longer participate in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. According to her, President Donald Trump supports the diplomatic end of the war, but his administration considers it inappropriate to mediate Washington in this process.
"The President wants each of our decisions as a nation to be diplomatic," Bruce said. At the same time, she emphasized that the US has other global priorities and can no longer focus all efforts in the Ukrainian direction.
From now on, according to the State Department, the initiative in the peaceful settlement of the conflict should go directly to Kiev and Moscow. The United States no longer plan to organize meetings, be intermediaries or coordinators of the negotiation process.
"There is a phase when Ukraine and Russia have to offer specific ideas for the end of the war. We are not going to fly the world to organize negotiations. It's now between two sides," Bruce said.
Despite the exit from the negotiation process, the US does not plan to reduce the sanction pressure on Russia. Washington leaves the restrictions in force and, if necessary, consider the imposition of new sanctions.
