According to MSN, the US government has announced the opening of the production of a new W93 nuclear warhead for intercontinental ballistic missiles, which will be intended for strategic submarines. This is the first production of this type in the last 40 years. The start of W93 production is scheduled for the mid 2030s.
The development of this warhead, which is part of the strategic program of modernization of the US nuclear arsenal, began in the Los-Alamos National Laboratory of the Ministry of Energy in May 2022. It is worth noting that this process does not include nuclear tests because the W93 is based on existing technologies. This was reported by Energy Minister Jennifer Grencholm and the head of the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) Jill Khrubi during a speech to the Senate Committee of the Armed Forces. Officials also emphasized that the United States remains true to the moratorium on nuclear tests.
Over the last year, the NNSA has announced the intention of the United States to start large -scale Plutonium production and release dozens of new nuclear warheads. This step was provoked by nuclear threats from Vladimir Putin and the actual exit of Russia from the last treaty governing strategic weapons.
NNSA has revealed its plans for the annual production of 80 plutonium cores - a key component of strategic and tactical nuclear warheads and bombs. The agency also planned to start work on the extension of the life of European nuclear bombs B61-12 and the modernization of the warhead of intercontinental ballistic missiles Trident II, located on submarines.
Last February, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would leave the strategic weapon agreement. In addition, he instructed the Ministry of Defense and Rosatom to prepare for the tests of Russian nuclear weapons, which have been prohibited since 1996 by a comprehensive ban on nuclear testing.
The last valid treaty between Russia and the United States, which limited the number of nuclear offices and their carriers, was concluded in 2010 with the participation of Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev. Its term was extended for 6 years in February 2021. However, according to Putin, the Kremlin no longer considers its observance for appropriate.
