The date of the holiday according to the new calendar

After the transition to the New Julian calendar, many church holidays are celebrated 13 days earlier, while the holiday of Malanka remains on the last day of the year.

History and meaning

In pre-Christian times, Ukrainians believed in the legend of the goddess of love Lada and the god of harmony Lado, who had a daughter Malanka. According to the legend, Malanka was kidnapped by a snake, and she was saved by a young man named Vasyl. They became friends, and the Malanka holiday became a symbol of the union of a man and a woman.

With the advent of Christianity, the traditions of the holiday were woven into church history. December 31 also honors Reverend Melania, who earned respect for her charitable work and devotion to religious ideals.

Holiday traditions

One of the main dishes of the festive table is Shchedra kutya. Various dishes such as pies, sausages, dumplings and pancakes are prepared on this day. It is forbidden to cook fish, as it is believed to cause loss of happiness.

Traditionally, they also organize charity events. This is a collective visit to the house, singing of blessings and glorification of the owners. Participants can dress up as folklore characters such as Lightning, the Plowman, the Bear, the Goat, the Gypsy, the Crane and the Horned Devil.

Different regions may have their own traditions and customs, but the general idea of the holiday is joy, reuniting the family and expressing wishes for the future.
