In the context of a continuing conflict in Ukraine, Finland President Stubb made an important statement, calling for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. In an interview with LE Monde, he expressed the opinion that Ukraine should begin a diplomatic process without expecting a complete release of territories captured by Russian troops.
"We are approaching the moment when negotiations must begin," he said in an interview with Le Monde.
At the same time, the main condition of Ukraine - withdrawing Russian troops from the occupied territories - "cannot be nominated as a preliminary condition for possible negotiations."
However, "the beginning of negotiations does not mean that you will make concessions."
“Ukraine needs security guarantees. And it is here that we can help her through bilateral agreements and a possible path to NATO, and, of course, to the European Union, ”Stubb said.
He also stated that Ukraine is now in a better position for negotiations.
“Ukraine and Zelensky are in a much stronger position than two months ago. They are provided with the necessary equipment and budgets to support their positions. We are no longer in the situation in which we were in the spring when we blocked American assistance, and there were difficulties in Europe with equipment delivery to Kiev. There is no Russian breakthrough, ”says Finland President.
