US President Donald Trump stated the need to acquire Greenland, citing "international security" considerations. As Politico reports, the American leader pointed to the threats coming from Russia and China and emphasized the strategic importance of this region.
"Greenland is a wonderful place. We need it for international security. And I'm sure that Denmark will agree, because it costs them a lot of money to keep her," Trump said.
According to the US president, Greenland is important not only for the United States, but also for global security. Trump emphasized the presence of Russian and Chinese warships in the region, which, according to him, Denmark is unable to effectively control.
"There are Russian boats everywhere, there are Chinese boats - warships - and they (the Danes) cannot control it," Trump emphasized.
Previously, Trump repeatedly announced his intention to purchase Greenland, which caused mixed reactions both in Denmark and among the international community. An autonomous territory of Denmark, the island remains a strategically important region due to its geographic location, natural resources and role in the global military presence.
