US President-elect Donald Trump plans to transfer most of the responsibility for providing military aid to Ukraine to European countries, reducing the amount of support from the United States. Such an approach can become an important test for the unity of the Western coalition in opposing Russian aggression.
As reported, Trump is already actively calling on European countries to increase their contribution to aid to Ukraine. Currently, the US remains the largest security donor to Ukraine, but the newly elected president is signaling an intention to reduce this support.
This approach is worrisome, as Russia's military invasion is now in its third year, and a reduction in US aid could significantly complicate Ukraine's struggle for independence.
Trump has also promised to hold talks to end the war, but has yet to provide clear details on exactly how he plans to get Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table. Since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, representatives of Ukraine and Russia have not held any meaningful negotiations, and the prospect of a diplomatic solution to the conflict remains remote.
The publication reminds that the current holiday season is already the third since the beginning of the war, and Trump's promises call into question whether it will be the last, if the support of Western countries decreases.
The US decision to reduce aid to Ukraine may increase the burden on European countries that already provide significant military, economic and humanitarian support. At the same time, it can weaken Ukraine's position in the war and on the diplomatic front.
European countries, which are already facing economic difficulties, may find themselves faced with a difficult choice, balancing between supporting Ukraine and their own internal needs.
