The Turkish Stream became the main supplier of Russian gas

In January 2025, the supply of Russian gas to Europe through the gas pipeline, the Turkish flow reached a historic maximum, exceeding 50 million cubic meters a day. It happened after the end of transit through Ukraine, which left the Turkish stream with the only route of Russian gas supplies to Europe.

According to Reuters, which refers to calculations on the basis of daily average exports, in January this year gas supply increased by 26.8% compared to the same period of 2024, reaching 50.6 million cubic meters per day. It is also 2% more than in December 2024 (49.6 million cubic meters per day). In January, Gazprom's exports through the Turkish flux are previously estimated at 1.57 billion cubic meters, which is much higher than last year (1.24 billion cubic meters).

Previously, the main routes of Russian gas supply to Europe were Yamal-Europe gas pipelines, the north stream, as well as transit through Ukraine. However, due to the geopolitical situation and the cessation of these routes, the Turkish flow has become the only direction to which Russian gas continues to enter the European market. Its capacity is 15.75 billion cubic meters per year.

Gazprom's total exports to Europe for 2024, according to Reuters, increased by 13% and amounted to about 32 billion cubic meters of gas, which, however, is much less than the peak rates of 2018-2019, when the concern supplied more than 175-180 billion cubic meters, providing more than 80%.

At the same time, the media reported that discussions have begun in the European Union on the possible return to the purchase of Russian gas. Proponents of this idea believe that restoring deliveries will help reduce energy prices in Europe and can stimulate Russia to the negotiation process.
