The Denmark government has submitted an proposal to implement automatic donation of bodies that became the subject of attention for public discussion. According to this initiative, every person who has reached the age of 18 will automatically become a potential organ donor.
It is noted that persons who do not want to give their bodies after death should actively abandon this opportunity.
According to Denmark Prime Minister Matte Frederixen, more than 400 citizens are expected to transplant organs, and over 30 people have died on this list over the past year. Its purpose is to avoid these deaths by stimulating more people to become donors of organs.
Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen noted that two -thirds of adult Danes express their desire to become donor organs after their death. However, he believes that this figure can be increased to attract more citizens to an active position.
In January 2023, the Ethics Council criticized the idea of automatic inclusion of citizens in the donor list, noting that "the right to freely choose from their own body is one of the basic principles of the current health care system."
The government emphasizes that its proposal should be seen as a subject for "wide discussion" in society.
