The Speaker of the Parliament of Hungary László Köver decided to impose a fine on the leader of the opposition party "Democratic Coalition" Ferenc Djurčany in the amount of 14 million forints (approximately 35 thousand euros) for sharply criticizing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during the session of the parliament.
The incident occurred during Dyurchan's speech at the beginning of the meeting, where he accused Orbán of "selling his honor" and losing the country's independence. "Today, Hungary has a treasonous government and a treasonous prime minister," said the politician, which caused a heated reaction from the speaker.
Kyover, reacting to Dyurchan's words, took the floor from him and ordered him to sit down, which caused a stormy exchange of thoughts between them. Dyurchan emphasized that such a fine testifies to the realities of Hungarian parliamentarism and Kyover's attitude to the opposition.
The leader of the "Democratic Coalition" also promised to appeal the fine to the European Court of Human Rights, noting that this decision is politically motivated and attempts to suppress criticism from the opposition.
The case highlights growing tensions between government and opposition forces in Hungary, where criticism of the government is often seen as a threat to stability.
