Ukraine, with great biomass resources, has the potential to meet both its own and European energy needs using residues and waste of agriculture.
Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Vitaliy Golovnya, stressed the conference "Prospects and Conditions for Biomethane in Ukraine", that the potential of biomass energy in Ukraine is over 25 million tons of oil equivalent per year.
The European Union considers biomethane production plans up to 35 billion m3/year by 2030, and Ukraine can potentially provide up to 20% of this need. Vitaliy Golovny emphasized that Ukraine can compete with other countries in the production of biomethane, offering the cheapest raw materials. With a large area of agricultural land of Ukraine, the country has one of the best potentials for biomethane production in the world.
Biomethane and biogas plants also produce digestat, which can be used as organic fertilizer, facilitating soil restoration. This contributes to the decentralization of the power system, ensuring the reliability of the energy supply of communities and increasing the income of agricultural producers at the expense of additional profit from the use of biomass residues. In general, the development of this industry strengthens the energy security of the country.
