President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said that Ukraine, the European Union and Russia have appealed to Azerbaijan to help preserve the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine. This message emphasizes the important role of Azerbaijan in the energy security of Europe and in the context of the trilateral negotiations.
"Now, in fact, with the help of Azerbaijan, both countries are conducting negotiations on the continuation of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine and on the supply of Azerbaijani gas through Russia and Ukraine to Europe," Aliyev said at the international forum in Chernobyl, Italy.
According to him, Baku has been negotiating for several months.
We remind you that the current contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of this year. Kyiv has already declared that it does not intend to extend the contract with Gazprom. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities make it clear that they will not be against the continuation of the transit of Russian gas, if it is carried out by European companies, concluding a contract with Gazprom.
