Since the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has imported 800 million cubic meters of natural gas to meet the country's energy needs. Naftogaz reported this on Friday, April 4, noting that at the moment it is an important step to maintain a stable energy supply in a difficult security situation and loss of national gas production through shelling.
As a result of hostilities and firing on the gas infrastructure of the country, Ukraine suffered significant losses in natural gas production. In only three months of the current year, eight attacks were recorded on gas and gas transportation infrastructure. This has seriously affected the volume of gas production in Ukraine, which forced Naftogaz to activate imports to cover the deficit. The priority task is to restore damaged gas production facilities and transport networks, which is critically important for ensuring stable gas supply in the country before the beginning of the next heating season.
"Our major efforts are now aimed at recovering damaged objects and renewing gas production. This will provide sufficient inventory and be ready for the next winter," the company said.
Despite the difficulties faced by Ukraine through the war, Naftogaz continues to import natural gas to maintain gas supply stability in the domestic market. According to representatives of the company, about 800 million cubic meters of gas are being imported today. This allows you to cover some of the needs of the population and businesses in blue fuel. However, much larger gas volumes are needed to ensure a full supply for the next winter.
To do this, Naftogaz actively cooperates with the Government of Ukraine and international partners to find the optimal financial mechanisms for purchasing the required fuel volumes. One of the important areas of work is to find new sources of funding for gas purchases, as providing sufficient reserves for the next winter is a critical task.
"We are working to provide the country with the necessary volumes of gas. Our team is actively negotiating with the government, as well as with international financial organizations and partners to support Ukraine in these difficult conditions," Naftogaz noted.
International support is equally important component of Naftogaz's work. In particular, the company received assistance from Japan, which provided Ukraine with special equipment, equipment and materials to ensure the operation of gas infrastructure facilities. This assistance includes technical solutions to ensure passive protection of gas infrastructure objects from possible attacks.
V.O. The chairman of the board of Naftogaz Roman Chumak, during a meeting with the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Massaha Nakagomy discussed the need to restore gas infrastructure and possible directions of further cooperation. Chumak expressed his gratitude for the assistance already provided, which helps to effectively restore damaged objects.
It is important for Ukraine not only to restore gas production, but also to ensure the proper level of gas reserves for the next heating season. Naftogaz aims not only to cover the deficit of domestic production, but also to increase stocks to ensure uninterrupted supply for the winter of 2025-2026. Given the continuation of hostilities and threats to energy infrastructure, Naftogaz actively cooperates with the government and international partners to ensure Ukraine's energy security for the future.
