Ukraine brings maritime legislation closer to EU standards

Ukraine is actively working on bringing legislation in the field of maritime transport to European Union standards. This issue was discussed during a meeting of representatives of the European Commission for Mobility and Transport Directorates (DG MOVE) and Neighborhood and Neighborhood Negotiation (DG NEAR) negotiations.

Deputy Minister of Community and Territories Development Andriy Kashuba stressed that maritime transport is the main channel of international trade in Ukraine, and in the context of European integration, the country aims to modernize this sector in accordance with European requirements. One of the priorities is the fulfillment of international obligations, which also include EU legislative framework.

The meeting has covered the discussion of directives and legislative acts concerning several aspects of maritime transport, in particular:

  • trade navigation and navigation on inland waterways;
  • sanitary and hygienic requirements and medical care on board ships;
  • training of sailors and qualification level;
  • supervision of compliance with the maritime legislation of Ukraine and international agreements;
  • Standards for verification and inspection of vessels.
