Ukraine is negotiating with the EU regarding the maximum increase in electricity imports

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenko, told Reuters about negotiations with the European Union regarding a significant increase in electricity imports. This step is critical in light of the losses caused by Russian shelling, which has severely damaged the country's energy infrastructure.

Russian shelling led to the loss of 8,000 MWh of generating capacity of the power system. A maximum of 1,700 MW is currently being imported from the EU.

"We are negotiating. Our task is to maximize this number. Technically we can get more than 2000 MWh, even 2400 MWh. I am sure that a decision will be made," says Galushchenko.

"Everything will depend on how quickly our European colleagues - operators of energy systems of neighboring countries - will be able to implement projects to expand the capacity of their networks," said the head of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi.

He added that European grid companies need time and money to strengthen some of their substations, install additional transformers or build new transmission lines.

"We believe that from 3,500 to 4,000 MW/h of capacity is what we can have on the horizon of five years," Kudrytskyi said.
