From June 1, 2025, a mandatory health insurance system for a certain category of citizens of Ukraine who are in temporary protection was terminated in Austria. It is about those who are not employed and do not receive basic social assistance. About it reports the Austrian Agency APA.
It is specified that the changes will not affect most Ukrainian displaced persons. Insured persons who receive the so -called "basic security" - social assistance provided to those who cannot cover the basic life costs on their own. Also, those who officially work in Austria are still under the insurance system.
Although the formal health insurance was stopped, the transitional grace period was established for Ukrainian citizens - by July 12, 2025. During this time, Ukrainians who have lost their insurance status will continue to have access to medical services, in particular to visiting a doctor and receiving medication.
This solution allows you to win the time to design a new insurance coverage - through employment or individual insurance.
Changes are primarily related to Ukrainians who do not work and do not seek basic assistance, for example, because of their own financial savings. According to Austrian agencies, in May 2025, about 35,000 Ukrainians received basic assistance, and they do not lose their insurance status.
Thus, a small number of displaced persons were at risk - those who are in Austria without employment have no official status of low -income but also have no medical coating for other grounds.
It is clarified that the basic support system ( Grundversorgung ) is intended for persons who are not able to provide themselves with housing, nutrition and medical care. This system also covers health insurance costs.
The Austrian authorities recommend that Ukrainians who have lost the status of the insured to take care of alternative insurance as soon as possible. The most realistic options are:
-
Official employment with automatic inclusion in the social insurance system.
-
Independent design of the insurance policy (individual insurance).
It is also recommended to contact social services, refugee assistance organizations and migration centers for support.
