Moldova President, Maya Sandu, announced a referendum on membership in the European Union in October. At a press conference in Chisinau, she noted that she appealed to the Parliament with a request to start the procedure of constitutional plebiscite planned on the same day as the presidential election.
Sandu emphasized that for most Moldova citizens, the European Union means peace and prosperity, while Russia is constantly trying to destabilize the situation in the country. She urged citizens not to provoke Russia and support the referendum, because the EU is the only one who can provide peace.
It should be reminded that on March 3, 2022, the Moldova authorities applied for membership in the European Union. On December 14, 2023, the leaders of the EU Member States made a decision to start negotiations on joining the Organization of Ukraine and Moldova. It was planned that Moldova would join the EU by 2030.
Sandu was also marked by its support of Ukraine in the war with Russian invaders, stating that Russia was trying to make a coup in Moldova.
