Global climate changes that lead to the reduction of climate coffee growing can lead to a significant rise in the price of this popular drink.
According to scientists, coffee trees are highly sensitive to temperature and other weather conditions. "They tolerate excessive heat, dryness or high humidity," Sophie von Leben explained from the Potsdam Institute of Climate Change.
According to information, the climate in many tropical countries where coffee is grown is becoming less stable. Some forecasts indicate that by 2050, the area suitable for growing coffee can be halved.
Theoretically, global warming can expand the possibilities of growing coffee in the northern regions, where it was previously too cold for this crop. However, in practice, serious obstacles interfere with this.
Most of the potential "new coffee areas" are covered with forests, whose cutting can be further exacerbated by the climatic crisis. In view of this, the European Union threatens the introduction of a complete ban on the import of food grown on the site of deforestation. Since Europe is the largest consumer of coffee, such a ban can adversely affect plans for the expansion of coffee plantations.
According to agencies, the tendency to rise in coffee prices is already noticeable. Over the last 30 years, when the impact of global warming has become noticeable, prices for green coffee have increased by about 60%, and for coffee products even by 600%.
