At the beginning of the year, the United Kingdom announced its intention to restore and improve ties with the European Union, which became a new direction for the country after Brexit. According to government representatives, this decision is one of the main priority tasks of the new government aimed at strengthening international relations and cooperation with key partners in Europe.
This was stated by the new Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom David Lemmy in an interview with The Guardian.
According to him, for many years, the United Kingdom has been drawn into a "conversation inside itself" because the exit from the European Union has absorbed political energy. And this must be put.
"Britain has to start reconnecting connections with the world," Lemmy emphasized.
The Foreign Minister noted that restarting relations with Europe is a special priority, which is why he makes his first trip abroad to Germany, Poland and Sweden, and then he will go to NATO Summit in Washington.
"Let's leave the years Brexit behind. We are not going to join a single market and the customs union again, but there is much something we can do together. I want to be absolutely clear: European countries are our friends," Lemmy said.
He added that the spheres of cooperation include energy and climate, but the most relevant is the safety issue.
"In a war in Europe, we must continue to spend money on defense and work closely," Lemmy said.
