Russia's war against Ukraine could cause earthquakes and floods

Heavy artillery strikes can lead to mines and cause man-made earthquakes, said Anatoliy Pavelko, Ecology-Right-Human Ecology.

According to Pavelka, there is currently direct data that the fighting is causing earthquakes (except the theoretical nuclear war). However, there are risks in the Donbass because of a large number of man -made objects, such as mines and careers that are in unstable geological state.

"The use of heavy artillery can lead to the destruction of mines and flooding, which can cause man -made earthquakes," Pavelko explained. He added that such earthquakes are usually local, but their consequences can be destructive.

The ecologist also warned that hostilities can make the situation with floods and floods. This can be due to the destruction of man -made objects, such as the Kakhovka reservoir, Sumy dam or dam on the Oskil River in Kharkiv region. The destruction of these objects has already led to floods, flooding of territories, destruction of infrastructure and violation of water supply.

Pavelko noted that floods can become more powerful due to disruption of man -made systems, which exacerbates natural phenomena. For example, the flood wave can be higher and more powerful.

The ecologist also stressed that thousands of hectares of forest have been destroyed in Ukraine, which leads to the loss of water protection and climatic functions of forests. This can cause catastrophic drought, wind erosion and blowing the topsoil.
