On Monday, December 18, Finland and the United States will sign a cooperation agreement in the field of defense, the Finnish government said on Thursday. According to the agreements, the US military will receive wide access through Finland to the Russian border, allowing to ensure rapid response and assistance in the event of a conflict, if it arises, officials said.
Finland, which became a NATO member this year in accordance with the situation with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, plans to give the US military opportunity to conduct regular training and possible permanent presence in its territory. However, the creation of permanent military bases is not provided.
According to the Agreement, Finland will not store or transport nuclear and biological weapons, as well as anti -personnel mines in its territory in accordance with international non -proliferation treaties.
The agreement defines 15 objects and territories in Finland, to which the US military will have unimpeded access. Among them are four air basements, a military port and railway tracks in the north of the country, where it will be possible to store military equipment and ammunition.
This agreement will be official after signing in Washington on Monday and ratification of both countries. It has been previously stipulated that similar agreements have already been signed by the United States with other NATO members, such as Sweden, Norway, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Estonia, and the Agreement with Denmark is at the approval stage.
