Russia, China and Iran can actively spread misinformation during the future elections to the European Parliament, which will take place in early June.
This was reported by the President of the European Parliament Robert Motzol.
"We have warned this for a long time. It is not just a threat, but a real reality," she stressed.
Motzola stressed that misinformation will be actively used during voting on June 6-9 to elect a new parliament.
The President of the European Parliament said that the European Union is already using various tools, including a new law that obliges social networks to remove illegal content and minimize the risks of election manipulation.
However, she emphasized that only new laws were not enough.
Motzola pointed to Russia, China and Iran as potential sources of misinformation, as well as political parties and organizations within the EU trying to attract voters' attention through manipulations.
"Maybe we have ignored this for too long. We must resist this narrative. It is much more difficult than a regular black and white campaign, but we must be ready for it," she added.
It is also worth noting that recently Belgium Prime Minister Alexander de Kroo has declared bribery of European parliament members for propaganda. The Czech Republic also announced the imposition of sanctions against the Russian propaganda network "Voice of Europe".
