Japan is creating a coordinating council for the reconstruction of Ukraine

Japan has announced the creation of a coordination council that will deal with the reconstruction of Ukraine. Representatives of Ukrainian and Japanese businesses are planned to join the council. This was reported by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine after the meeting of the Ukrainian delegation with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan Hiromasa Nakano.

During the negotiations, which were led by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Svyridenko, the Japanese side confirmed its readiness to hold the first meeting of the newly created council. Representatives of the government of Ukraine have already been officially invited to participate.

The Ukrainian side has identified several key directions in cooperation with the Japanese government within the framework of infrastructure restoration:

  • Reconstruction of housing infrastructure with the involvement of advanced Japanese technologies and innovations.
  • Exchange of experience for the training of Ukrainian specialists in the transport sector.
  • Restoration of railway infrastructure , including provision of Ukrzaliznytsia with steel rails.

According to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the country needs 25 thousand tons of R-65 type steel rails. Previously, Japan had already transferred 25,000 tons of these rails to Ukraine through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Thanks to this, in 2023-2024, it was possible to restore 200 kilometers of railway tracks.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed ways to involve Japanese companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Among other things, it was about the tools that the private sector needs from the governments of both countries to implement joint projects. Japan, which has many years of experience in eliminating the consequences of natural disasters, is ready to share its expertise and technologies to speed up the reconstruction of war-torn Ukraine's infrastructure.

Holding the first meeting of the coordination council will be the next step in the implementation of joint projects that will open up new opportunities for Japanese and Ukrainian business.
