Japan Launches Digital Nomadic Visa: What It Means and Who Can Apply

Japan plans to launch a digital nomadic visa by the end of March 2024. This initiative will allow the citizens of 49 countries to stay in Japan for up to 6 months and perform work remotely from anywhere in the world. Thanks to its introduction, it will be possible to combine travel with work, enjoying the bundle cities, beautiful scenery and unique pop culture of Japan.

Citizens of countries who have a tax agreement with Japan or do not need visa to entry may apply for this visa. This applies to all countries of the European Union, as well as Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Monaco, Northern Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Great Britain, Australia, Singapore, South Korea and the United States. However, a stable income is required to obtain a visa, with Japan citizens need to have income of more than 10 million Japanese a year ($ 67.5 thousand or 2.5 million hryvnias).

This visa can be obtained by both highly qualified specialists and IT industry employees. Such an initiative is aimed at "rejuvenating" the population of the country at the expense of foreign workers.

The main condition for obtaining this visa is the implementation of a "established activity", which covers freelancers and people who work remotely in companies outside Japan. It is assumed that even YouTube bloggers who have income from foreign advertisers will be allowed to receive a nomadic visa. The availability of private health insurance is a prerequisite for visa registration, as well as for children and partners of traveling.

It is important to note that a nomadic visa will allow remote workers to stay in the country for up to six months, which is twice as much as a visa -free travel. It is also worth noting that ordinary visas in Japan do not allow you to work, even remotely.
