The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced on Thursday the definition of the shortlist of the topics for the next generation of euro banknotes, which became "birds and rivers" and "European culture".
The choice of topics was made on the basis of two public polls. According to the research ordered by the ECB and the Kantar, the topic of "European culture" received the most support - 21% of 23,000 respondents. It was followed by the topics of the river (18%) and "birds" (17%).
The ECB representative emphasized the desire to widely present the results of the survey, noting that both topics concern "nature and the environment".
In a more extensive online survey of the ECB, which was attended by 365,000 people, birds were the most popular topic, receiving support for one third of respondents (33%), exceeding culture (23%) and rivers (16%).
The ECB warned that his survey could be biased due to the possible impact of the media and influentors to participate in the survey. It has also been noted that respondents are likely to consist of young technically saved people and may not be representative of the Eurozone population.
ECB President Christin Lagarde noted that the selected topics unite Europe and its inhabitants, answering the purpose of making banknotes more understandable to different social groups.
The decision on the motives for the chosen topics is planned to be made by the end of 2024. The design competition will then be announced and additional design options will be conducted. New banknotes are expected to appear in 2026.
