The EU plans to completely abandon Russian gas by 2027

The European Union set an ambitious goal - by 2027 to completely abandon Russian gas. Part of this plan will be the use of a promising Black Sea gas field in Romania, which has already provided the first export agreements with EU countries. About it reports Reuters .

The Neptun Deep Romanian deposit is engaged in the Austrian company OMV , which has already concluded the first gas export contract. The German company Uniper has become a buyer by signing an agreement for the delivery of 15 TVT-hours (approximately 1.7 billion cubic meters) for five years. This corresponds to 1.5% of all gas imports in Germany in 2024.

Neptun Deep deposit , located on the Romanian Black Sea shelf, has a huge mining potential estimated at 100 billion cubic meters of gas. For comparison, preliminary estimates during its opening in 2012 provided inventories within 42-84 billion cubic meters.

The launch of production is planned for 2027, which will make this deposit one of the largest in the European Union.

After the operation of the deposit, Romania will become the largest gas producer in the EU. For the first time, the country will not only meet its energy needs, but also become a clean gas exporter, helping the EU diversify its supply sources.

This step is part of a broader EU strategy aimed at reducing Russian gas dependence. Alternative sources of supply include increasing the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the development of their own energy projects within the Union and cooperation with international partners.
