The European Union intends to raise the closure of Russian military bases in Syria during negotiations with the country's new government. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy Kai Callas after meeting with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of EU countries.
According to her, many European leaders insist that deprivation of Russian influence in Syria should be an important condition for establishing a dialogue with Damascus.
"These bases, where they also operate on Africa and southern neighbors. This is certainly concerned about European security," Callas said.
The EU leadership has already sent a high -ranking diplomat to Syria to establish contacts with the country's Provisional Government. In this way, Brussels seeks to start a dialogue with Damascus on the future Russian military objects in the region.
For his part, the Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Weldkmp during the meeting also emphasized the need for the withdrawal of Russian forces:
"Regarding Russian military bases in Syria, we want Russia to go," Veldkmp said.
Earlier, the European Union stopped all diplomatic relations with Bashar Assad regime, but the latest political changes in the country open new opportunities for dialogue. The EU views this as an opportunity to reduce Russian influence in a strategically important region of the Middle East.
