The European Commission has decided to impose additional duties on a number of agricultural goods and nitrogen fertilizers from Russia and Belarus. On January 28, the EC press service reported.
New restrictions will affect products that have not previously fallen under increased tariffs, and was 15% of the total agricultural imports from Russia in 2023.
The European Commission has explained that the introduction of new tariffs is aimed at supporting the internal market of the EU. In particular, it is expected that these measures will contribute to the growth of European fertilizer production, which has suffered losses during the energy crisis. In addition, duties should stimulate diversification of supply from third countries.
At the same time, Brussels emphasized that restrictions will not affect Russian products through the EU territory to other countries.
The introduction of duties requires approval by the European Parliament and the EU Council. They will vote for this proposal by a qualified majority within the framework of joint EU trade policy.
