The European Commission is considering a potential threat from Telegram

Telegram, a Russian messenger, attracts the attention of the European Union because of its potential threat in the form of absence of Russian propaganda. Vice President of the European Commission on Value and Transparency, Vera Yourov said that the EU is currently analyzing this situation.

According to Yourova, Telegram can serve as a platform for spreading fake news, since it lacks mechanisms for combating this phenomenon. The Russian messenger is already quite widespread in the Eastern EU member countries, where a significant number of Russian-speaking people live.

In the context of EU legislation, the Telegram is under a special call. EU rules impose duties on platforms with a minimum of 45 million users within the block. However, Telegram claims that its users in the EU are only 42 million people below the threshold established.

"We are currently checking whether this figure is reality.

Criticism also directs Telegram because of his connections with Russia. Although it is not yet proven that the messengers of the messenger are in the territory of the Russian Federation, but the owner of Pavel Durov and the main developers are citizens of Russia. Additionally, the Telegram administration has open links with Roskomnadzor and FSB.

In March, the Supreme Court of Spain temporarily banned the use of Telegram in the country because of local media complaints. The latter is not satisfied with the ability of users to download content without the consent of the right holders.
